Date : 1997 1021

A storage tank containing 18/m3 hydrochloric acid released 8/m3 and a toxic, irritating acid cloud of 200/m2 was formed. The storage tank was situated at a chemical company, located in a industrial park, 1/km far from a metropolitan area of a city. 3 people were injured slightly.
At least 40 policemen shut off the industrial park. The fire brigade and their Special Protection Unit tried to block the crack and dilute the toxic cloud. 10/m3 was transferred to other tanks and the remaining chemical was neutralized by using water and about 10000/kg of bicarbonate and sodium carbonate. The major part of the spill ended into the drains, because the chemical factory, against what is settled by the legislation, lacks receiving reservoirs to canalize the spill.
